How do you feel in today’s standards of beauty?

I have my high and my low days. I think we all do - isn’t that only natural..?

Do you feel pressured?

Only my own pressure. I only do what makes me feel good about myself.

When do you feel at peace?

When I paint.

What is beauty to you?

Confidence and to be true to yourself

What do you want us mostly to retain?

A young woman at ease within her element

ELEONORA

How do you feel in today’s standards of beauty?

Hello! I have worked on myself to be calm and comfortable with my appearance. I've always felt not very beautiful, not very thin, not quite right. With time and a lot of psychoanalysis I have reached a balance. Furthermore, as a creative and woman I try to commit myself every day to universalize a canon of beauty that does not concern perfection, but could expresses harmony, even in defects. So I try as a photographer to celebrate the woman, of any shape, weight, color, height, enhancing her.

Do you feel pressured?

The pressure is up to you. It is you who every day put yourself under scrutiny, challenge yourself, compete with your body, with others, with the expectations of the outside world, and if you can not get scratched by all this, the preservation of your inner well-being repays you with a great serenity and strength that you can use to improve yourself.

When do you feel at peace?

I feel at home when I don't need to be who I am not, when I can remain in silence. When I feel accepted, when I photograph.

What is beauty to you?

Beauty for me derives from a concept that passes through my classical studies, through my family home, my garden, the Mediterranean, the South of Italy, and the constant attention to beauty that my parents have inculcated in me. It is something that concerns harmony, the objectivity of beauty, and is closely connected to neoclassical art.

Why did you take these particular pictures?

I took these photos for ACK because I am convinced that the normal woman can be celebrated by making her wonderful, without necessarily praising the perfect body of professional models. I wanted normal girls like us to feel celebrated. I hope I have succeeded.

What do you want us mostly to retain?

I would like the concept that we all are and we can have the opportunity to be muses, inspirers, goddesses, elements of fertility and sexuality, beyond our appearance. I wish that no one felt out of place anymore, like I have done for so long.

SARA BY AVIVA

How do you feel in today’s standards of beauty?

S: I feel comfortable and happy. It’s taken me a while to get here and it makes me sad tothink about how much time I’ve wasted thinking about things that really don’t matter andmissing out on opportunities because I didn’t feel good in my skin but life is a learning curve. Ithink there’s no longer just one definition of beauty rather there are many and it’s whatever wewant it to be. Individuality is encouraged and there is less pressure to hide our “imperfections”.

A: I’m surprisingly comfortable with myself and accept my place in the world. It’s notalways easy because in my work I am exposed to so much beauty, and the fashion industry isstill so image conscious - however in saying that it is changing for the better. I believe if yousurround yourself by people who make you smile, drive you and inject confidence into you, thenyou stop caring what other people think and you’re able to build up your self-esteem.

Do you feel pressured?

S: I still have moments where I feel pressured but I think I’m a lot stronger than what I used to be. I’m an anxious person by nature and I don’t think it’s something that will ever go away but I can identify the triggers and deal with how they make me feel a lot better than before. I think it’s very easy for us get caught up with what we think we need to look like or be doing with our lives but the thing is we’re all different, following our own journeys so we shouldn’t be so hard on ourselves.

A:I feel pressure to be everywhere. Life is precious and how much you can give is finite. I want to be everywhere and see everyone and do everything - there is so much I wish to absorb. And then I get ahead of myself. I get stressed out and start sleeping poorly and from there it’s a ripple effect. I don’t think it is necessarily a good way to be living my life and it certainly isn’t sustainable, but at the moment it’s my normal. I should probably start prioritising haha.

When do you feel at peace?

S: In the summer, practising yoga, sticking to a routine and spending time with people who make me smile and feel happy.

A: I feel at peace late at night - the day is over, the work is done, the house is silent and my mind is on fire. I’m flowing with creativity and I can feel it pump through my veins.

What is beauty to you?

S: It’s many things. It’s Komorebi, sunset swims, riding through Rome on the back of a Vespa, summers spent in Positano, nostalgia. It’s kindness, how you treat people, your soul, it’s having patience, love and generosity.

A: Beauty to me is somebody who doesn’t give a shit. Natural hair, limited makeup, an effortless flair, plenty of teeth and a bold laugh. Also people who don’t see themselves as more than others - my Nonna told me you can learn something from everyone and I have taken that advise with me through my life and admired it when I see it in other people. And of course nature - cliffs that have taken thousands of years and grains of sand to form and the fact that birds fly in a “V” shape. In Perth we are blessed with lots of beauty in nature and it is not difficult to be inspired. I think the best beauty is in things that are free and unique.

Why did you take these particular pictures?

S: We wanted to have fun and keep things light-hearted considering everything that’s happening at the moment. It’s both a reflection of our time in isolation (speaking with friends over the phone, exercising at home, spending more time in nature) and an appreciation of our hometown.

A: We wanted to capture a moment from home for you guys in LA. Sara and I both live close to the river and have grown up around it, so it was important for us to incorporate it. Complimented by blue skies and vivacious bougainvillea’s. It’s funny, it’s less than a month before winter and we are out here on a 26 degree day shooting swimwear.

What do you want us mostly to retain?

S: Make the most of every moment and appreciate the beauty of our nature. Be kind, be patient and be forgiving to others and to yourself.

A: Ditch the makeup, spend time in nature, take risks and speak and do everything that you think because life goes unbelievably quick.

ODILE

How do you feel in today’s standards of beauty?

I can’t stop thinking about the time when I was younger, when beauty standards were spread threw the few medias we had. A unique type of beauty was shown and it was very difficult for insecure people to feel like they belong. I feel very comfortable in today’s standards of beauty; threw medias like instagram, we can see that we finally realized there are not just one but so many type of beauties that has to be celebrated.

Do you feel pressured?

I have anxiety issues, so I feel pressured all the time. It’s very difficult to deal with it but I’m trying more and more to work on it.

When do you feel at peace?

Being surrounded by people I love, I feel at peace. But when I’m all by myself, working on my breathing really helps me to clear my mind and to find inner peace

What is beauty to you?

Beauty for me is being true with yourself and to others. Standing by what you believe in, and not letting someone else’s opinion change the way you are. I think beauty is more about your inner self than the way you look.

Why did you take these particular pictures?

I didn’t want to cheat on the way my body really looks with photo editing: I wanted my curves, scars and freckles to be seen because they are parts of who I am.

What do you want us mostly to retain?

Be gentle to others, but never forget to be kind to yourself.

VAEA, WAHYNE AND CHIARA BY WIISSA

I’m Vanessa — the “ssa” of Wiissa, and I work with my husband, Wilson

How do you feel in today’s standards of beauty?

V: Surprisingly confident despite the pressures. I definitely fluctuate between self conscious and confident, but I feel like I was forced to work out a lot of my insecurities in my early teens. They were greatly affecting my life at the beginning of high school, and I knew I had to learn to love myself if I wanted to enjoy my life!

W: I kind of feel like I fit within the standards of beauty based off what people tell me, but is it normal that there even are beauty standards? I don’t think so. 🙄

VAEA: Personally, I find that my body fits within these standards, but that is not to say that I’m satisfied with it. We always want more, an incessant quest towards the illusion of "perfection”. This is why I look less and less at the bodies of others on my instagram feed. You have to learn to love yourself as you are and especially appreciate your body within your own framework of beauty.

Do you feel pressured?

V: I still feel pressure, especially with having to wear makeup when my skin breaks out, or shave everything before going to the beach (and I basically live at the beach). But I’ve realized it is mostly the people I am surrounded by who determine how much I feel pressured. I try to surround myself with people who love and accept themselves, and therefore those around them, as much as I can.

W: When I was younger I felt a lot of pressure, the common ones like having more curves, straight hair, big lips, etc. But nowadays I feel better, I don’t feel as much pressure as before. I’ve learned to appreciate a lot of things about myself, thanks to my mom and all these women on social media who show us we’re not obligated to be how society wants us to be.

VAEA: Absolutely, from the moment we set foot on Instagram, we allow others to judge us. The pressure is so strong that sometimes you feel the urge to show off a perfect life. And that's when we fall into a kind of endless spiral. Nowadays I’ve stopped posting to show how cool my life was, because it was sort of like lying to myself. Now I post when I want, without artifice.

When do you feel at peace?

V: Coming home after a long day at the beach, salty and a bit sun kissed. Or dancing naked in front of my mirror!

W: We will feel at peace the day when no matter what your color, height, age, hair, and your GENDER, we will not be judged.

VAEA: Oddly, the moment I stop posting on Instagram is when I really feel at peace. Nobody can judge me, be it positive or negative. Not posting is my way of taking a little break from society and the pressures of social networks.

What is beauty to you?

V: A colorful sunset, a hibiscus flower, rays of light underwater.

Why did you take these particular pictures?

V: Wilson and I got into photography as teenagers by taking photos of our friends on the beaches of Miami. We found this group of girls who live in the French West Indies on instagram, and knew we wanted to do a playful and bright shoot celebrating the island’s nature and friendship between the girls — similar to our earlier shoots. We always love shooting underwater, and knew Vaea, Chiara and Wahyné were perfect for it since they live on these beaches. After a long swim offshore, they were diving down 30 feet multiple times for photos like it was nothing!

What do you want us mostly to retain?

V: So much beauty is found in nature, and spending time immersed in it can help you forget the everyday pressures for our own beauty. Take a walk or a swim, and remember we’re each just a tiny grain of sand in this huge world!

YLANG BY ELEONORE WISMES

How do you feel in today’s standards of beauty?

E: I can see that standards of beauty are changing in a good way. Even if the standards in the publicity stay the same, I think women can see now the different between a retouched and a not retouched photo. There are more and more images of girls with different bodies. I think women accept more and more who they are. It’s slowly but good.

Y: Actually, I feel confident because I accept my identity and don’t care about standards of beauty. We are all different, there is a large diversity of beauty.

Do you feel pressured?

E: I don’t feel pressured myself. But I know some models can live with a real pressure in the industry of fashion. One day, I shot a girl who just came back from Japan. Her agency asked her not to eat too much rice over there, so as not to gain too much weight. It’s completely insane.

Y: I don’t. I try to accept myself, my body, my flaws everyday and to do abstraction of pressure.

When do you feel at peace?

E: I feel at peace when I create. Also swimming in the sea. It’s clearly the most peaceful place for me.

Y: When I find people who are sharing the same opinion as me, without judgement.

What is beauty to you?

E: Beauty for me is simply the energy you give off.

Y: Beauty is more about personality, self confident and attitude than physical.

Why did you take these particular pictures for Ackua?

E: I wanted to recreate a dreamy diary of those hot summer days that ACK reminds me.

Y: That was my first shoot of a swimwear brand. I was so proud to work with ACK, so proud to show my body and my scars. I love myself with all of my flaws and that was a big step. I feel more and more confident.

What do you want us mostly to retain?

E: Continue to allow women to express themselves as you do with your image! Bravi!

Y: Sincerely, I just want to say that you have to accept yourself. Nobody is perfect, everyone is different. Your flaws are the most important part of you, there is nothing more beautiful than imperfections. Be yourself, and don’t care about the other.

JENNIFER

How do you feel in today’s standards of beauty?

I feel more relieved with myself, I used to not like my skin color when I was younger because the south asian beauty is less represented and all I would see in magazines was white and super skinny girls. I feel that today there is not a beauty standard but more multiple beauty standards.

Do you feel pressured?

Less than before, but still in another way, we used to have magazines now we have social media with a lot of similar body types (specially the ones that did plastic surgery) and girls tend to think that it is the body type they should have while it doesn't really exist before plastic was such a normal thing to do. Different problems in different centuries I guess..Sometimes a bit, sometimes I got my friends to remind me that we should love ourself and if not there is the gym to be healthy in the spirit and body!

When do you feel at peace?

Actually, after I had a gym session in the morning and relaxing after the shower.

What is beauty to you?

For me beauty is everywhere I hate "beauty standards" I’m always admiring the less common faces and bodies, because for me it is where you find the more beautiful energy. And something uncommon is always less seen more rare. For me beauty is atypical.

Why did you take these particular pictures for Ackua?

I never really showed my body on pictures because I wanna keep my intimacy and go against the movement where girls showing off their bodies but retouching their pictures, on the other hand I love when girls share their natural pictures. And I also wanted to show that you can wear any piece of clothing in a different way that it was supposed to be worn.

What do you want us mostly to retain?

I think that what you might see on campaign platforms and magazines is never really real life, but also that you are not forced to love the way you look but just admit that you have something special and it can change your vision of yourself.

What is a feature of your body that you didn’t like before and you now appreciate?

Having big boobs, it’s always been hard for me to not be insecure and self conscious about it but now I’ve learned to embrace it, everyone’s different and that’s okay :)

How do you feel when in your swimming suit?

I feel confident and fearless.

Why Ack?

When I discovered Ack, I immediately fell in love with the rawness it was trying to show of women’s bodies, in contrast with vibrant colors and cool details, which I thought was original. When I wore the swimsuits, they enhanced my curves and i felt so comfy in them!!

ELIANAH BY DREW ESCRIVA

Who are you and how are you?

E: My name is Elianah and I am a student at NYU and model. I'm feeling thankful to have spent much of summer at the beach and with friends and family but I miss my dog Elvis and cannot wait to be reunited.

D: I'm Drew, a film photographer that's happily working in Los Angeles.

What is a feature of your body that you didn’t like before and you now appreciate?

E: My lips. As a child I was made fun of for my features, my lips being one of them, but now they are my favorite.

D: I'm on the shorter side, at 5' 1" I'm always surrounded by people taller than me, who often underestimate me. But I appreciate this now because I have (and am still!) learning to take up space with my voice.

How do you feel when in your swimming suit?

E: Ready for the sun to give me a hug and happy that being in it entails spending time in nature. I also feel sexy.

D: In the right swimming suit, I feel comfortable and beautiful, and forget it's even there.

Why Ack?

E: I love how unique Ack is. I feel connected to designs that I can identify with and Ack cultivates that experience. I've never seen swimsuits like Ack before– they are their own pieces of art and that translates to how you feel wearing them. I feel like myself in Ack.

D: Ack's designs are timeless but playful, never boring in a photo. They accentuate the wearer and allow them to shine.

LOUISE, GEORGIA, CHINE

Who are you and how are you?

My name is Luna Martin, I am 20 years old. I love art in general but I am mostly interested in photography, it's a discipline that I practice a lot. The past few months, I started to paint, and I enjoy it a lot. I am feeling pretty good in general, but sometimes, when I overthink too much, I try to put my emotions in my art, it helps me focusing on what I am doing, and helps me to be more comfortable and confident with myself.

What is a feature of your body that you didn’t like before and you now appreciate?

I'm still insecure about a lot of stuff, especially at this age where we're growing up. Personally I've never been insecure about my body, nothing truly bother me.

How do you feel when in your swimming suit?

I haven't got the chance to wear it already, but I'm really excited and I can't wait to wear it on the beach this summer!

Why Ack?

What I really like are the  colours and details on each swimsuits, but more than everything I love  the mood of the brand ; all the pictures posted on the ACK Instagram are pictures that inspires me for my pictures, that's why it means a lot to me.

GRABIJA, NAKITHA, TAMO BY SAVANNAH BAKER

Who am I?

T:I am still deciding

N: I’m a Cosmic being more formally know as Nikitha.

G: Gabija Mitchell  Aka “Auntie Gabija”

How am I?

T: I am super and getting better

N: How am I?! I am full of light.

G: I call myself a Creative Selecta as am from the Caribbean and work in the creative industry. At a transitional stage in my life and have moved to Jamaica for a few weeks to clear my head. The sunshine and being back in the Caribbean is doing wonders for my mood and work flow - feeling great!

What is a feature of your body that you didn’t like before and you now appreciate?

T: My small slightly slanted eyes. I used to desire full eyes that I thought made better canvases for creative eyeshadow play, but now that I don't care for make-up I appreciate them more. Now my slanted eyes are more of a curiousity about any Asianic branches in my family tree.

N: Growing up I always thought my legs were too long and skinny. These skinny long legs proved to be an advance later on in life though. I got a lot of friends that most definitely can’t reach the coffee in the kitchen cabinet.

G: I’m 6ft + so growing up I was always single out as too tall and wouldn’t wear anything with a heel. Now I wear heels all the time!

How do you feel when in your swimming suit?

T: Definitely a little body conscious because I have scars but way more than that playful and sometimes sexy

N: Like a woman. A delicate flower and sometimes like flaming fire.

G: Growing up on an island meant I wore a swimsuit more than I wore under wear. If I’m in the tropics it’s the first thing I put on everyday. It feels natural, my friend once described my dress style as cozy but not clothed - swimsuits play into that mentality very well!

Why Ack?

T: Ack brand comes in an array of fun vibrant colors something an island girl like myself can always appreciate, plus the swimmies are soft and easy on the skin/body , squeeze and pinch free.

N: Ack has got swim for all body types and I dig that.

G: Seen a few friends wearing them but wasn’t sure of the brand name until Savannah Baker and I collaborated for a shoot. I love the high waisted bikinis as the hold me in and keep my body sharply when feeling bloated! Perfect way to stay comfortable during that time of the month!

CAMI BY YULIA ZINSHTEIN

Who are you and how are you?

Hi I'm Yulia Zinshtein and I'm doing pretty good this morning, listening to Drake drinking coffee.

What is a feature of your body that you didn’t like before and you now appreciate?

My boobs for sure, I felt they were too big! Even though that doesn't sound too bad they always felt in the way, girls with bigger breasts know the struggle. I've learned to love them and feel sexy.

How do you feel when in your swimming suit?

I'm feeling fun and happy, because it usually means I'm basking in the sun somewhere by the beach and swimming.
